Commitment to Sustainability

With a commitment to sustainability, climate friendly standards and reducing our show’s environmental impact, Outdoor Retailer practices what we believe—that sustainable business, environmental stewardship and climate action are critical as we move forward.

There are two participants in this: Outdoor Retailer and YOU!

What steps can your company take?

If your company is taking active steps on climate action, embracing more sustainable products and production, and addressing environmental impact, you have the opportunity to get the word out. Recycling and sustainability-related sponsorships are available – please contact your Account Executive.

What steps does Outdoor Retailer take?

  • Partners with venue and event sponsors on recycling, reuse, and composting programs.
  • Eliminated the use of aisle carpet and offer recycled booth carpet to exhibitors. Getting rid of it saved 1,200 gallons of diesel fuel from shipping, preventing 12 metric tons of carbon from entering the atmosphere.
  • Eliminated the sale of sell single-use plastic bottles during Outdoor Retailer – no plastic bottles of water, soda, etc are sold in the venue. For reference, 6,618 bottles were sold at the Summer 2018 show.
  • Provides water stations to increase use of reusable water bottles.
  • Works with concessionaire Centerplate to ensure all food vessels are compostable, including utensils and straws.
  • Provides 3-bin systems (recycle, compost, landfill) in partnership with the venues.
  • The Venture Out zone design elements feature closed loop, commodity-driven materials (steel, wood, standard retail fixtures) which are easy to source and infinitely recyclable.
  • Reduced printing and increased use of electronic communication. For example: mobile app, online registration, online exhibitor service manuals, e-newsletters, and digital sales kits.
  • Maintains a paperless press room, saving thousands of pounds of paper, shipping and fuel costs, and resources.
  • Uses 100% recycled paper for printing of show map and magazine.
  • Provides recycling bins for used badges.
  • Partnered with local organizations to provide new home or create new uses for signage.
  • Encourages attendees to use public transportation options and participate in hotel linen reuse programs.

What steps is Emerald taking?

  • Working with SISO and global exhibitions industry leaders on a two-year independent research project to gather authoritative baseline data on, and analysis of, the current environmental impact of the US and Canadian B2B trade show industry.
  • Signed the Net Zero Carbon Pledge for the Events Industry.
  • Partners with Freeman, general services contractor and also signee of the Net Zero Carbon Pledge, which is prioritizing eco-conscious choices, minimizing or eliminating waste, and reducing carbon footprint. Read more about Freeman’s sustainability practices here.

Salt Palace Convention Center

  • The Salt Palace Convention Center, along with its in-house partners Visit Salt Lake and Encore, has been practicing green initiatives for many years and attained three Events Industry Council Sustainable Event Standards Certifications (EIC SIS) – levels are Gold, Silver, and Silver, respectively.

One of the core values is “responsibility to the environment” and that is reflected in the venue’s ongoing practice to reduce, reuse and recycle. In-house partners and all departments participate in diversion tracking system in order to collect data on green practices and work toward a goal of 70% diversion.
